– Hola Oliver, ¿cómo estás? Recientemente se lanzo «Get Over It», ¡un gran álbum! ¿Háblame del proceso de escritura? ¿Compusiste el disco en plena pandemia o las canciones son más recientes?
Todo bien!, muchas gracias! Es bueno escuchar que te gusta el álbum. Cada álbum y su proceso de composición es un poco diferente, esta vez, también. La mayor diferencia en comparación con las producciones anteriores fue simplemente la cantidad de tiempo. Además de todos los aspectos negativos de la pandemia, fue un momento especial con sus “bloqueos”, no poder hacer giras o trabajar normalmente y todo lo demás, también ha sido una oportunidad para concentrarse al cien por cien en HARTMANN y en la composición del nuevo álbum. Fue una oportunidad para, cómo decirlo, salir de la “rueda de hámster” normal en la que probablemente estamos todos de alguna manera, ver las cosas desde una perspectiva diferente y usar todo el «tiempo extra» para algo positivo y nuevo. Y aunque me encanta ser parte de varios proyectos y bandas en lugar de hacer una sola cosa, esta fue probablemente la primera vez que tuve la posibilidad de continuar durante más de unas pocas semanas seguidas, o algunos días aquí. , algunos días allí – simplemente debido a todas las giras con Avantasia, mi Pink Floyd Tribute Echoes y otros proyectos durante los últimos años.
– Este es un disco muy fresco y directo. ¿Querías un álbum como este desde el principio o cambió en el proceso?
Sí, fue exactamente mi objetivo desde el principio producir un álbum fresco, directo y homogéneo. Comienza pensando el sonido, más directo y natural, donde afortunadamente Sascha Paeth nuevamente hizo un gran trabajo, con un poco menos de teclados pero guitarras más rockeras y termina con la composición y la elección de las canciones. Para ‘Get Over It’ fue realmente la primera vez que tuvimos más de 20 canciones realmente buenas para elegir al final. Y no todas las canciones eran ideas nuevas. Algunas de ellas eran ideas antiguas o inacabadas, o canciones completas, como la canción ‘Can’t keep away from you’ que guardé para un proyecto en solitario con Eric Martin, y demos que estaban ‘dormidos’ en mi disco duro y necesitaban despertar para finalmente ver la luz del día. Pero el objetivo más importante era tomar y elegir las mejores 10 u 11 canciones que podamos encontrar. Si solo hubieran sido 9 buenas pistas, no habría tomado más para un álbum completo. Como en los buenos viejos tiempos. Puedes escuchar muchos álbumes geniales del pasado, especialmente de los años 70 y 80, y probablemente reconocerás que a menudo solo tenían 8, 9 o un máximo de 10 pistas. Por supuesto, también debido al tiempo limitado de reproducción de un disco de vinilo, pero fue un buen efecto secundario para evitar canciones mediocres o rellenos, jaja 🙂 Es todo lo contrario de la declaración de Yngwie, ¡pero, por supuesto, menos puede ser más!
– Hay momentos rockeros, más blueseros, baladas… me recuerda un poco a tus primeros discos…
Por supuesto, Sascha Paeth y yo tuvimos una lluvia de ideas y una larga reunión antes de comenzar la producción de ‘Get Over It’ o incluso comenzar a elegir canciones. Por supuesto, es un álbum diferente, tal vez algo típico de HARTMANN, lo que supongo que a los fanáticos también les encanta, y puede haber algunas similitudes aquí y allá con ‘Out in the cold’ y otros álbumes anteriores. Pero el objetivo no era sonar como hace 17 años, sino hacer un álbum cien por cien auténtico, sin importar si es una balada, una pista más blues como ‘Just drive’ o una melodía de rock pesado como ‘The movie’s end’. Mira el título del álbum. ‘Get Over It’ es un álbum positivo y el título fue elegido debido a mis experiencias durante este tiempo de “corona” (Covid), la muerte de mi padre a principios de 2022 y otras razones. Como ya dije, fue un momento duro y difícil para muchos de nosotros, pero en cierto punto no tiene sentido seguir preocupándonos todo el tiempo y quejarnos o lloriquear por cosas que simplemente no podemos cambiar. Así que me dije a mí mismo: ‘Trata de no desperdiciar demasiada energía en malos pensamientos, supéralo y saca lo mejor de esta situación’. Aprende algo de todas estas experiencias e intenta convertir lo negativo en positivo”. ¡Y convierte todos tus sentimientos y emociones en buena música!

– Han pasado 17 años desde «Out in the cold» y nunca has dejado de lanzar discos de gran calidad y no es fácil hacerlo. ¿Qué piensas cuando miras hacia atrás y ves el camino recorrido?
Oh, sí, ha pasado un largo camino desde el álbum debut en 2005 y cuando miro hacia atrás ahora a estos 8 álbumes de estudio, una compilación y nuestro CD/DVD acústico en vivo ‘Handmade’, supongo que no lo haría muy diferente. Incluso si probablemente algunos lanzamientos como la producción en vivo mencionada anteriormente u otros álbumes incluyeron algo inesperado para los oyentes. Pero para ser honesto, eso es lo que amo de la música: los momentos inesperados que necesitan atención y que deben explorarse. Aunque puede ser un concepto exitoso hacer y sonar siempre igual, ¿no sería aburrido si ya conocieras el disco antes de escucharlo? Creo que sí.
Lo único que me gustaría cambiar cuando miro hacia atrás es que intentaría hacer más giras en vivo, también en otros países y partes del mundo, por supuesto, en Argentina y Sudamérica también. ¡Pero eso es lo que estamos haciendo y/o en lo que estamos trabajando ahora y supongo que habrá mucho más por venir en el futuro cercano!
– Estamos en un mundo donde las plataformas de música dominan el mercado de discos físicos. ¿Pudiste adaptarte bien a estos cambios? ¿Has pensado en no lanzar más discos físicos?
Bueno, cómo puedo decir… Todos tuvimos que acostumbrarnos al mercado cambiante y a todos sus impactos realmente negativos. No soy un gran fanático de los servicios de transmisión simplemente porque la participación y las regalías para el artista en sí son demasiado bajas. Por supuesto, especialmente Spotify les está diciendo a sus accionistas algo totalmente diferente, y tengo curiosidad por saber cómo intentarán «modificar» eso en la dirección equivocada pronto nuevamente, pero así es como es. Por supuesto, es una gran plataforma para todos los usuarios y oyentes, digamos la radio perfecta a pedido, pero nosotros, como músicos, estamos entregando la información completa para estas plataformas y simplemente debemos ser tratados de manera justa. Y no lo somos. Pero todavía hay un mercado físico interesante cuando tú, como artista, le das a la gente algo especial como vinilos que suenan bien y se ven bien, cajas (realmente) limitadas, copias firmadas de CD en tus tiendas en línea. También tenemos una tienda web en nuestra página de inicio. – y muchas otras cosas. Pero, por supuesto, solo puede compensar esto de forma limitada. Veamos si aún podremos lanzar álbumes completos como hardware en el futuro. Eso espero porque simplemente es una experiencia diferente tener una portada y un folleto que puedes tocar y abrir, ver fotos y leer información sobre las canciones, el disco, la producción. Obtienes una conexión diferente. Pero, por supuesto, entiendo que el mundo digital que estoy usando también es una grandioso y que cada estante de CD y vinilo está simplemente lleno en un momento determinado de tu vida, jaja 😉

– Actualmente tocas en «Echoes» (Homenaje a Pink Floyd) ¿Cómo nació este proyecto?
La banda en sí fue fundada en 1995 y formo parte de ella como cantante y guitarrista desde 2002. ¡Vaya, más de 22 años! Desde el principio, la banda se hizo más exitosa paso a paso y hoy en día puedo decir con orgullo que somos el tributo a Pink Floyd más conocido y exitoso en Alemania. Probablemente no al menos debido a nuestras dos producciones que lanzamos durante los últimos años. Uno se llama ‘Barefoot to the moon’, una producción acústica en vivo sin instrumentos eléctricos pero que incluye un conjunto de cuerdas por pieza, que entró en las listas en el puesto 20 cuando se lanzó en 2015, y ‘Live from the dark side’ que se grabó en un festival en 2018 pero con grandes cantantes y músicos invitados como Midge Ure de ULTRAVOX, Michael Sadler de SAGA, Dominique Leurquin de la banda francesa de rock progresivo LAZULI y por supuesto Geoff Tate, ex-cantante de QUEENSRYCHE y ahora mi compañero de banda en AVANTASIA!
Eres muy activo como músico, ¿estás trabajando actualmente en algún otro proyecto que no conozcamos, ya sea como productor o como invitado?
Normalmente siempre trabajo en algo nuevo de alguna manera, pero ese momento realmente trato de concentrarme en la promoción de nuestro último álbum ‘Get Over It’, en las próximas fechas de la gira en Alemania y España a partir del próximo fin de semana. Y además de eso, trato de no hacer demasiadas cosas al mismo tiempo. Lo cual ya es bastante difícil, ja 😉

-¿Vas a hacer una gira con Avantasia en o estarás más dedicado a tu propia carrera?
En este momento estoy tratando de mantenerme enfocado en lo que sigue para HARTMANN pero, por supuesto, también espero con ansias las próximas fechas de la gira sudamericana con AVANTASIA en abril. Acabo de recibir la noticia de que hemos sido confirmados para Masters Of Rock en Buenos Aires el 28 de abril junto con KISS, DEEP PURPLE, HELLOWEEN y SCORPIONS, los reyes del hard rock y metal alemán! Será genial para nosotros y, por supuesto, para los fans. Y estamos felices de poder tocar frente a una de las audiencias más grandes y ruidosas del mundo 😉

– Hello Oliver, how are you? recently released «Get Over It», a great new album ! Talk me about the writing process? Did you compose the album in a pandemic or are the songs more recent?
I’m doing fine, thanks a lot! Grat to hear that you like the album, Well, every single album and it’s songwriting process is a little different. This time, too. The biggest difference compared to the productions before was simply the amount of time. Besides all the negative aspects of the pandemic this special time with its lockdowns, not being able to tour or work normally and everything else has also been a chance to concentrate a hundred percent on HARTMANN and the songwriting for the new album. It was a chance to – how can I say – get out of the normal hamster wheel that we’re probably all in somehow, to see things from a different perspective and to use all the ‘extra time’ for something positive and new. And although I absolutely love to be part of various projects and bands instead of only doing one single thing this was probably the first time where I had the possibility to keep at it for more than just a few weeks in a row – or some days here, some days there – simply due to all the touring with Avantasia, my Pink Floyd Tribute Echoes and other projects during the past years.
– This is a very fresh and direct album. Did you want an album like this from the beginning or did it change in the process?
Yes, it was exactly my aim right from the beginning to produce a fresh, direct and homogenous album. This starts with the more direct and natural sound of the album – where luckily Sascha Paeth again did a great job – with a little less keyboards but more rocking guitars and ends with the songwriting and the choice of songs. For ‘Get Over It’ it was really the first time that we had more than 20 really good songs to choose from in the end. And not all the songs were brand new ideas. Some of them were older or unfinished ideas or complete songs – like the track ‘Can’t keep away from you’ that I kept for a solo project with Eric Martin – and demos that were ‘sleeping’ on my hard drive and needed to be waken up to finally see the light of day 😉 But the most important goal was to only take and choose the best 10 to 11 songs that we can find. If it would only have been 9 good tracks I wouldn’t have taken more for a full album. Like in the good old days. You can listen to many great albums of the past – especially in the ‘70s and ‘80s – and you will probably recognize that they often just had 8, 9 or maximum 10 tracks. Of course also due to the limited playing time of a vinyl record but it was a good side effect to spare out mediocre songs or fillers, haha 🙂 It’s quite the opposite of Yngwie’s statement but of course less can be more!
– There are rock moments, more blues, ballads… it reminds me a bit of your first albums. What do you think about it?
Of course me and Sascha Paeth had a brainstorming and a long meeting before we started the production of ‘Get Over It’ or even started to choose songs. It’s of course a various album – maybe something typical for HARTMANN what guess the fans the fans love, too – and there might some similarities here and there to ‘Out in the cold’ and other earlier albums. But it wasn’t the goal to sound like 17 years ago but to do a hundred percent authentic album, no matter if it’s a ballad , a more bluesy track as ‘Just drive’ or a heavy rock tune as ‘The movie’s end’. Look at the album title. ‘Get Over It’ is a positive album and the title was chosen due to my experiences during this corona time, the death of my father in early 2022 and other reasons. As I already said it was a hard and difficult time for many of us but at a certain point it doesn’t make sense to go on worrying all the time and to moan or whine about things you simply can’t change. So I said to myself: ‘Try not to waste too much energy on bad thoughts, get over it and make the best out of this situation. Learn something from all these experiences and try to turn the negative to the positive’. And turn all your feelings and emotions into good music!
– 17 years have passed since «Out in the cold» and you have never stopped releasing high quality albums and it’s not easy to do it. What do you think when you look back and see the way traveled?
Oh, yes, it’s been a long way since the debut album in 2005 and when looking back now on these 8 studio albums, a compilation and our acoustic live CD/DVD ‘Handmade’ I guess I wouldn’t do it a lot different. Even if probably some releases as the upper mentioned live production or other albums included something unexpected for the listeners. But to be honest that’s what I love about music: The unexpected moments that need attention and that need to be explored. Although it might be a successful concept to always do and sound the same but wouldn’t it be boring if you already knew the record before you’ve ever listened to it? I think so.
The only thing I’d like to change when looking back is that I would try do more live touring, also in other countries and parts of the world – of course in Argentina and South America, too. But that’s what we are doing and/or working on now and I guess there’s a lot more to come in the near future!
We are in a world where music platforms are dominating the physical disc market. Were you able to adapt well to these changes? Have you thought about not releasing more physical albums? What do you think about it?
Well, how can I say… We all had to get used to the changing market and to all it’s really negative impacts. I’m not a huge fan of streaming services simply because the share and the royalties for the artist itself is way too low. Wayyyy to low. Of course especially Spotify is telling their shareholders something totally different – and I’m curious how they will try to ‘modify’ that into the wrong direction soon again – but that’s the way it is. It’s of course a great platform for every user and listener – let’s say the perfect radio on demand – but we as musicians are delivering the full input for these platforms and should simply be treated fair. And we are not. Period. But there’s still an interesting physical market when you as an artist give the people something special as good sounding and looking vinyl, (really) limited box sets, signed copies of CDs in your online shops – we got a web shop on our homepage, too – and many other things. But of course you can only compensate for this to a limited extent. Let’s see if we will still be able to release full albums as hardware in the future. I hope so because it’s simply a different experience to have a cover and a booklet you can touch and open up, to see pictures and to read infos about the songs, the record, the production. You get a different connection. But of course I understand that the digital world that I’m using too is a great thing and that every CD and vinyl shelf is simply full at a certain point of your life, haha 😉
– You are currently playing in «Echoes» (Tribute to Pink Floyd) how was this project born?
The band itself was founded in 1995 and I’m part of it as singer and guitarist since 2002. Wow, more than 22 years now! Since the beginning the band became more successful step by step and nowadays I can proudly say that we are the most well known and most successful Pink Floyd tribute in Germany. Probably not at least due to our two productions we released during the last years. One is called ‘Barefoot to the moon’ – an acoustic live production without any electric instruments but including a for piece string ensemble – that entered the charts on #20 when released in 2015, and ‘Live from the dark side’ that was recorded on a festival in 2018 but with great guest singers and musicians as Midge Ure of ULTRAVOX, Michael Sadler of SAGA, Dominique Leurquin of the French progressive rock band LAZULI and of course Geoff Tate, ex-singer of QUEENSRYCHE and now my band mate in AVANTASIA!
You are very active as a musician, are you currently working on any other projects that we don’t know about, either as a producer or a guest?
I normally always work on something new somehow, but that the moment I really try to concentrate on the promotion of our latest album ‘Get Over It’, on the upcoming tour dates in Germany and Spain starting next weekend. And besides that I’m trying not to do too many things at the same time. Which is already difficult enough, ha 😉
-Are you going to tour with Avantasia on the next tour or will you be more dedicated to your own career?
Right now I’m trying to stay focused on what is next for HARTMANN but of course I’m also looking forward to the upcoming South American tour dates with AVANTASIA in April. I just got the news that we have been confirmed for Masters Of Rock in Buenos Aires on April 28th together with KISS, DEEP PURPLE, HELLOWEEN and SCORPIONS, the kings of German hard rock and metal! It will be either great for us and of course for the fans. And we’re happy to be able to play in front of one the greatest and loudest audiences in this world 😉
